English is often used as a common language in international business, diplomacy, and travel, making it essential for global communication. Filipinos are considered to be fluent and good communicators in the English language. Since English is our second language and we communicate in official and formal settings in English, then we can say that Filipinos can be at par with native speakers of English language.
English serves as a medium for sharing literature, music, film, and other forms of culture, facilitating cross-cultural understanding. Classic and modern literature are taught in schools using English as a medium of instruction. The use of a common language makes it easy to understand all throughout different cultural settings and background. Although the context may not be altered, but the use of English in the instruction makes it easier for teachers and students to learn the lessons and genre of study.
A significant amount of academic research and scientific literature is published in English, making it crucial for scholars and professionals. International journals, thesis, and dissertations are published in English. This is good avenue for research references. Reenforcing your study with related literature that has the same language used makes it easy with the transition and referencing.
English continues to evolve, incorporating new words and expressions, especially with the influence of technology and social media. A language is considered to be active and dynamic when it continues to evolve, and when we say that, we mean English continues to add new words, expressions, and vocabulary while some of the English words have become obsolete through time and usage.
English dominates the internet and social media platforms, influencing how language is used and adapted in digital communication. As people spend so much time in social media, English language is the common language used in conversations, comments, posts, shares, and media content. The world is getting smaller through social media and language barriers have been broken down by the use of English in the communication process of social media users or whet we call “netizens”.
Understanding English can enhance communication skills and cultural awareness. English is understood and used in almost everywhere in the world. Our ability to speak and understand the language can take us to places and adapt to the different cultural settings.
