Students usually attribute “Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao” teaching as preparation to become a priest, pastor, or any religious leader. The fact that EsP and religion are closely intertwined, each influencing the other in various ways, we cannot blame the students for thinking so. Now, we will look at some points that are common to both.

Many religious teachings emphasize values such as compassion, honesty, respect, and justice. The foundational values are core teaching in both EsP and religion. Values education often draws on these principles to promote ethical behavior, which is essential in our dealings with the members of the society whether in school or in church. Religious teachings can serve as a framework for developing moral character, encouraging individuals to embody virtues in their daily lives. Character development is built and enhanced in both settings; undeniably, this is where the intersection lies.

In many contexts, religious education is a key component of values education. It provides students with a deeper understanding of moral teachings and their application in everyday situations. Across the curriculum, it is offered to strengthen students understanding of the various religious beliefs and practices. Even in secular settings, educators may integrate values derived from various religious traditions to foster mutual respect and understanding among diverse student populations. The interplay of major religions as represented by diverse students can make a pathway towards interfaith dialogues and representations leading to more religious tolerance.

Religious communities often provide a sense of belonging and support, reinforcing values such as kindness and service to others. This is also the pillars of teaching EsP. Many religions encourage community service and social justice, which are essential components of values education. Engaging in service activities helps students practice these values in real-world contexts. The practical context of the lessons that students learned inside the classroom translated in the community provides a strong evidence that values should not be taught in isolation, rather, these values should be brought out to the communities and families for practical use.

The teaching of EsP and religion both play significant roles in shaping moral development and ethical behavior. Regardless of religion and denomination that students may belong with, it is fundamental that they develop moral virtues, practice ethical standards, exhibit good relations, and act appropriately according to the universality of religious practices and beliefs.
