In commemorating the 106th birth anniversary of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr., his son, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., paid tribute to his father’s legacy of peace and order.

The event took place on Monday in their hometown of Batac in Ilocos Norte, where Marcos Jr. offered a wreath of flowers at the Marcos Monument.

During the thanksgiving mass at the Immaculate Conception Parish, Marcos Jr. spoke about his father’s contributions to peace and order.

He emphasized the development that his father inspired among Filipino citizens and the dreams he left in the hearts of many.

While Marcos Jr. praised his father’s commitment to peace, it is important to examine the accuracy of this account.

Former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. is primarily known for his declaration of martial law in 1972, which suspended parliament, arrested opposition politicians, and imposed total censorship. His regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses, corruption, and the torture and killing of his opponents.

During Marcos Sr.’s presidency, millions of Filipinos lived in extreme poverty as the country’s debt continued to mount. The dark period in the nation’s history cast a shadow on any claims of peace and order.

It is undeniable that some development took place during Marcos Sr.’s rule.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge the cost and the oppressive nature of his regime. The high-profile murder in 1983, which eventually led to Mr. Marcos Sr.’s downfall, was a stark reminder of the atrocities committed under his leadership.

As President Marcos Jr. hopes that his father’s values, ideals, and visions for the country will inspire future leaders, it is important to remember the full context of the Marcos legacy.

It serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the importance of upholding democracy, human rights, and transparency in governance.
