PAGASA Dismisses False Claims of Three Days of Total Darkness
PAGASA dismissed the unfounded assertions, stating that there is no scientific basis for such claims.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has refuted a hoax circulating on social media claiming that the Earth will plunge into three days of complete darkness due to its passage through so-called “photon belts” on April 8.
In a press statement, PAGASA dismissed the unfounded assertions, stating that there is no scientific basis for such claims. “Astronomers have not observed any evidence of a band of high-energy photons surrounding the Milky Way galaxy,” the agency emphasized. “While the concept suggests transformative effects on Earth, both physical and spiritual, there is no empirical support for this theory.”
PAGASA clarified that the notion of the Earth traversing a Photon Belt and undergoing significant transformations lacks credibility within the scientific community. “This idea, originating from New Age and metaphysical circles, lacks scientific evidence and is deemed pseudoscientific,” the agency explained.
Regarding astronomical events on April 8, PAGASA highlighted the occurrence of a total solar eclipse known as the Great North American Eclipse. However, this event will not be visible in the Philippines. “The totality of the solar eclipse will be observable in a narrow strip over the Pacific Ocean, north of the Marquesas Islands, before proceeding to North America,” PAGASA stated.
While certain regions in North America will experience temporary darkness during the eclipse due to the moon’s transit in front of the sun, there is no indication of prolonged darkness affecting Earth. PAGASA emphasized the importance of relying on credible scientific sources and cautioned against spreading misinformation that may cause unnecessary alarm or confusion among the public.
