Securing the Future: PH Cybersecurity Plan for a Strong Defense
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has yet to approve the comprehensive five-year national cybersecurity plan aimed at positioning the Philippines as a formidable force against potential foreign adversaries in the cyber domain.
The plan outlines the government’s overall strategy to safeguard critical targets from cyberattacks that could have detrimental effects on the economy and national security, even before any physical military engagement.
During a recent forum on governance and security, Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy highlighted the importance of securing the country’s cyberspace.
The strategy seeks to fortify defenses against cyber threats and potential disruptions that could compromise national interests.
At the same forum, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. expressed the military’s intentions to enhance its cyberwarfare capabilities.
He emphasized that cyberspace is a level playing field, allowing even smaller nations like the Philippines to excel and compete with larger and more technologically advanced countries.
Gen. Brawner recalled the infamous “I Love You” virus, a cyber worm created by a Filipino in 2000. The virus had infected millions of computers worldwide.
This example illustrates the potential and talent within the Philippines for cybersecurity initiatives, he said.
With the impending approval of the national cybersecurity plan, the Philippines aims to become a formidable player in cyber space.
