COTABATO CITY – Two motorcycle-riding men shot dead a soldier, and stole his motorcycle after the attack in Kabacan, Cotabato on Thursday night.

Authorities identified the victim as Pfc. John Ian Delgado Castor of the 90th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.

Investigators said Delgado was driving his motorcycle through a stretch of the Cotabato-Kidapawan Highway in Barangay Kayaga, Kabacan, on his way to a destination from their detachment in Pikit, Cotabato.

The motorcycle-riding assailants shot him repeatedly from behind. One of the gunmen rode Delgado’s motorcycle after the attack.

Brig. Gen. Jimili Macaraeg, the director of the Police Regional Office-12, revealed that intelligence agents from the Army’s 90th IB, responsible for covering Kabacan and nearby areas, are assisting the investigation in identifying the culprits.

The suspects, witnesses said, fled towards Montawal, Maguindanao del Sur.

Macaraeg said the incident appears to be a case of motorcycle theft (“agaw motor”).

The motorcycle of Castor was found abandoned by pursuing policemen at the border of Maguindanao del Sur and Cotabato provinces, already out of fuel.

He urged the public to allow investigators sufficient time to identify the perpetrators and file charges against them.
