Worldcoin launched on Monday with its primary feature being the World ID, a unique “digital passport” designed to verify users as humans and not AI bots.

To obtain a World ID, individuals must undergo an iris scan using the ‘orb,’ a device developed by Worldcoin for identity verification, resulting in the creation of a World ID upon successful verification.

Worldcoin is a cryptocurrency initiative led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Tools for Humanity is the company Worldcoin.

During its beta phase, Worldcoin has already attracted 2 million users and now plans to expand its operations to 35 cities across 20 countries.

To incentivize sign-ups, individuals in select countries will receive Worldcoin’s cryptocurrency token WLD.

Co-founder Alex Blania asserts that World IDs can be stored on blockchains in a manner that preserves privacy and avoids centralized control ensuring their utility in distinguishing between real humans and AI bots, especially in the age of generative AI chatbots.

Altman envisions Worldcoin playing a potential role in shaping the economy in a future dominated by generative AI.

He speculates on the possibility of deploying universal basic income (UBI) through Worldcoin.

This to address income inequality in a world increasingly influenced by AI, he said.

While Altman acknowledges this future may be distant, he believes Worldcoin represents a step in the right direction.
