On the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day, environmental organization BAN Toxics is intensifying its call for promoting plastic-free sari-sari stores as a means to combat plastic waste in the Philippines.

To emphasize the significance of refilling in small quantities, the group presented a mock sari-sari store with the signage “Kahit konting pagTINGI.” BAN Toxics aims to demonstrate that the Filipino Tingi-tingi culture can adopt a plastic-free approach, as it has been practiced in communities for years.

Rey San Juan, BAN Toxics Executive Director, highlights the concept of refilling as a changemaker and calls for the support of leaders to reintroduce refilling and other alternative systems. The organization urges stakeholders to embrace accessible alternatives, considering the Global Plastics Treaty on the horizon.

The Philippines generates 2.7 million tons of plastic waste annually, with only about 28% being recycled. The country is known for its “sachet economy,” using millions of plastic sachet packets, shopping bags, and thin film bags daily.

BAN Toxics advocates for a “Zero Waste” approach, emphasizing the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle at the community level. The organization aims to curb the consumption of single-use plastics and sachets and promote reuse among consumers. Sustainable packaging alternatives and innovative delivery systems are encouraged.

Businesses are urged to invest in sustainability efforts to drive changes in consumers’ buying behaviors. Refilling stations and zero-waste stores, which eliminate plastic packaging and encourage the use of reusable containers, are key components of the initiative.

BAN Toxics focuses on environmental justice, health, and sustainable development concerning chemicals and wastes, with a special emphasis on vulnerable groups like women and children.

The organization envisions a future free from plastic pollution, where individuals and businesses alike play a pivotal role in preserving the environment.
