Experts emphasize the importance of recognizing the signs of vitamin D deficiency for maintaining optimal health, particularly as an increasing number of people are being tested for it.

Despite the Philippines being a tropical country, 3 out of 5 Filipinos suffer from vitamin D deficiency.

Dr. Aparna Bhanushali, head of growth and scientific support at Haystack Analytics, highlights that vitamin D deficiency is also prevalent in India, affecting around 68% of the population.

This deficiency is observed in both urban and rural areas due to factors such as urbanization, lifestyle, skin color, dress code, and genetic predisposition.

Identifying the signs of deficiency is crucial, according to nutritionist Ruchita Batra. Fatigue, weakness, lack of energy, and general weakness are common indicators of vitamin D deficiency. Frequent illness can also be a sign, as vitamin D plays a crucial role in supporting a healthy immune system.

Bone and muscle pain are other possible symptoms of deficiency. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone health, so inadequate levels can lead to weak bones, joint discomfort, and muscle aches.

Mood changes, including mood disorders like depression and anxiety, have also been linked to low vitamin D levels.

To address the deficiency, it is important to identify genetic predisposition, monitor vitamin D levels, and consider supplementation.

Spending time outdoors and increasing sun exposure, consuming vitamin D-rich foods, and taking supplements are recommended strategies to replenish vitamin D levels.

Regular monitoring of vitamin D levels is advised, and with proper guidance, deficiency can be significantly improved and managed, allowing individuals to regain vitality and well-being.
