The United Nations has cautioned that this year may experience even higher temperatures than the unprecedented record-breaking year of 2023 due to El Niño.

Urging significant cuts in emissions to combat climate change, the UN’s World’s Meteorological Organization highlighted the establishment of new monthly temperature records from June to December.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a 1 in 3 chance of 2024 surpassing 2023, with a 99 percent certainty that it will rank among the five warmest years.

NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt suggests a 50-50 chance of it being warmer, emphasizing potential “mysterious” changes in Earth’s climate systems.

The WMO confirms July and August 2023 as the hottest months ever recorded and officially declares 2023 as the warmest year on record.

The 2015 Paris climate accords aimed to limit global warming, but the WMO reports a 2023 global temperature 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, warning that El Niño, emerging in mid-2023, could intensify temperatures in 2024.

Climate change, labeled “the biggest challenge that humanity faces,” is underscored by record-high levels of greenhouse gases, emphasizing the urgent need for human activity-driven solutions.
