The Philippines has seen a modest improvement in the latest release of the annual Passport Index by London-based consultancy firm Henley & Partners. The Philippine passport now grants its holders visa-free access to 69 destinations, earning it the 73rd spot in the Henley Passport Index. This places it on par with Cape Verde Island and Uganda.

The latest ranking marks a slight advancement from its 75th position in the previous year, during which Philippine passport holders enjoyed visa-free entry to 66 destinations.

Notably, the trajectory has seen an upturn since 2022 when the Philippine passport ranked 80th and 83rd in 2021—its lowest standing since 2006. The period of 2007 to 2009 saw the country’s best performance when it held the 62nd position.

The Henley Passport Index evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without requiring a prior visa. Drawing data from the International Air Transport Authority, the index encompasses 199 passports and assesses access to 227 travel destinations.

Explaining the methodology, the index notes, “For each travel destination, if no visa is required for passport holders from a country or territory, then a score with value = 1 is created for that passport. A score with value = 1 is also applied if passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority when entering the destination.”
